MEMS market projected to hit double-digit growth, again
Propelled by strong sales of mobile handsets, gaming controllers, digital cameras and other consumer electronics devices, the micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) market will return to double-digit growth in 2010 after two years of decline, according to market research firm iSuppli Corp.
The total MEMS market will be worth about $6.5 billion, up more than 11 percent from last year and nearly as high as its historic peak in 2007, according to iSuppli (El Segundo, Calif.). By 2014, the MEMS market will surpass $9.8 billion, iSuppli predicted.
Besides booming consumer sales of MEMS chips, automotive applications are also growing as smarter MEMS sensors are needed in safety systems like rollover detection, lane departure warming, collision avoidance and automatic parking. Other growing markets listed by iSuppli included at-home medical devices, industrial controllers and defense-aerospace applications.
Inkjet printheads will continue to be the largest market segment, ahead of accelerometers, pressure sensors, gyroscopes and optics for MEMS displays, iSuppli said. However, starting in 2011 pico projectors and MEMS flat-panels will begin to grow in market share, along with MEMS microphones, BAW filter, varicaps and autofocus mechanisms for camera phones, according to the firm.
