Five years ago, network operators were still hesitant to outsource operations and entrust their business to someone else, so the amount that they spent on network managed services totaled just US$5 billion in 2007. Today, almost every network operator depends on managed services for at least part of their operations and network managed services totaled US$12 billion in 2011 according to ABI Research.

While finishing strong in the last quarter of every calendar year is typical for vendors in this market, Huawei exceeded expectations and overcame Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to grab second place in the market. As usual, Ericsson was the market leader, with approximately US$3.5 billion in wireless network equipment sales during 4Q2011.

Despite the 2008-2009 economic setbacks, the RFID market rebounded nicely in 2010, growing slightly more than 14% to reach roughly USD 5.3 billion. When automobile immobilization hardware is extracted from the total, the market grew close to 18%, capturing nearly USD 4.4 billion. ABI Research's ongoing research and data collection efforts reveal a projected total market size of nearly USD 6 billion in 2011, reflecting slightly more than 11% growth.
